David falls asleep in three minutes. Flat on his back, zero adjustments, out cold. I take 45 minutes, need my head elevated to read, prefer a softer mattress, and can't fall asleep if his side of the bed is moving. We'd been compromising for eight years. Which means we'd both been sleeping badly for eight years.
We looked into separate bedrooms - it felt like giving up. Then a friend mentioned split king. Two separate adjustable bases, side by side, in one king-sized frame. Each person gets their own remote, their own mattress firmness, their own positions. My first thought was 'won't there be a gap down the middle?'
"There's no gap. A fitted split king sheet goes over both mattresses and creates a seamless surface. We didn't know that until we tried it."
We took the Sven & Son quiz together on a Friday night with a glass of wine. It recommended the Platinum Split King - David got the 10" Firm, I got the 14" Hybrid Soft. Two completely different mattresses on one bed frame.
The first night was a revelation. David went flat and fell asleep immediately. I elevated my head 35 degrees, turned on the reading light, and read for 45 minutes without disturbing him. When I was ready to sleep, I pressed zero gravity on MY side only. His side didn't move an inch.
We've had exactly zero arguments about the bed since. That sounds trivial, but if you're a couple who fights about temperature, firmness, elevation, or bedtime routines - you know it's not trivial at all. Sleep conflict bleeds into everything.
"Our relationship improved. That sounds dramatic for a bed purchase, but sleep deprivation was making us both irritable. Now we actually look forward to getting into bed together."
One concern we had: would split king feel less intimate? It doesn't. The mattresses sit flush together under the sheet. You can still cuddle, still roll over to each other's side. The only difference is when one person wants to adjust, only their side moves.
If you and your partner have different sleep preferences - different firmness, different schedules, different positions - stop compromising. Compromise means nobody gets what they want. Split king means everybody does.
